After Stree, Rajkummar Rao signs another horror-comedy Rooh-Afza

After the humongous success of their last collaboration Stree (2018), which prides on being one of the highest grossing films of all times, actor Rajkummar Rao and producer Dinesh Vijan have joined forces once again for yet another horror comedy.

Titled Rooh-Afza, the film will be jointly produced by Dinesh Vijan and director-turned-producer Mrighdeep Lamba who is best known for his Fukrey franchise. Aside from Rajkummar Rao, it will also feature talented actor Varun Sharma in a prominent part.

Rooh-Afza revolves around a female ghost who is notorious for putting grooms to sleep and possess their brides in order to make their lives hell. Rajkummar and Varun play two small-town idiots in the film. The makers are currently busy finalizing the female lead. If all goes well, the movie will start rolling in May.

The new horror-comedy is set against the backdrop of a folk legend popular in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. As per the legend, every time a couple marries in the town, the bride scrambles to keep the groom awake through their first night. “At the same time, the chudail (witch) is trying to put him to sleep with a lullaby. It is believed that if a groom dozes off, she proceeds to possess his bride in a bid to make his marital life hell. The film is a laugh riot all the way while, at the same time, talk of the legend and the spirit will have you looking around yourself, wondering if she is anywhere close by,” informs Dinesh Vijan.

The producer goes on to add, “Even though it is named after the refreshing summer drink, Rooh-Afza, there is nothing sweet about it.”

Highlights:

  • Government to criminalise porn that shows strangulation or suffocation during sex.
  • Part of wider plan to fight violence against women and online harm.
  • Tech firms will be forced to block such content or face heavy Ofcom fines.
  • Experts say the ban responds to medical evidence and years of campaigning.

You see it everywhere now. In mainstream pornography, a man’s hands around a woman’s neck. It has become so common that for many, especially the young, it just seems like part of sex, a normal step. The UK government has decided it should not be, and soon, it will be a crime.

The plan is to make possessing or distributing pornographic material that shows sexual strangulation, often called ‘choking’, illegal. This is a specific amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill. Ministers are acting on the back of a stark, independent review. That report found this kind of violence is not just available online, but it is rampant. It has quietly, steadily, become normalised.
