Asian couple thrilled after diver found lost engagement ring from bottom of Windermere

AN ASIAN couple, who lost a diamond ring shortly after they got engaged in the Lake District, was thrilled after a local diver found it from the bottom of England's largest lake.

Viki Patel and his fiancee Rebecca Chaukria were having a celebratory photo session at a jetty overlooking Windermere lake on Saturday (29) when her diamond ring slipped off and plopped into the lake.

"We saw it sink and could just about see it shining at the bottom,” said Patel who completely panicked and began undressing to jump in, but was stopped by his fiancee from doing so.

Patel then ran back to the hotel to get shorts and a vest and stopped by a water sports place where he explained the situation. They told him about Lake District Diving and Angus Hosking, the freediver who is often called upon to find lost possessions in the lake, BBC reported.

After giving a try at diving into the lake himself, Patel contacted Hosking who brought along an underwater metal detector and found the ring in 20 minutes.

“He was scouting around for a while, and I was starting to get worried; then he emerged from the water with a smile, saying 'I think we have it',” said Patel, who is now full of praise for Hosking and the Lake District Diving team, not just for helping people but also for their work cleaning up the environment, funded solely by donations.

"I gave something to their funding page, but he wouldn't take anything personally," Patel said, adding that Hosking is a “brilliant, brilliant man” and would “love to invite him to their wedding in August.”
