THE head of Britain's CBI business lobby has stepped down to allow for an investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct.
Confederation of British Industry director-general Tony Danker said on Twitter it had been "mortifying to hear that I have caused offence or anxiety to any colleague".
"The CBI is the employers' organisation... We always strive for the highest standards," he added.
The CBI said in a statement it had investigated an allegation over Danker's behaviour in January and determined that it "did not require escalation to a disciplinary process".
However, the CBI added on Monday that it was "made aware" last week of "new reports regarding Tony Danker's workplace conduct" and had now launched an investigation.
The Guardian newspaper had reported last week that the allegations involved a female employee.
"We have now taken steps to initiate an independent investigation into these new matters," the CBI said Monday.
"Tony Danker asked to step aside from his role as director-general of the CBI while the independent investigation into these matters takes place."
