Champions Chennaiyin beaten by Goa

FC GOA handed defending champions Chennaiyin FC a 3-1 defeat in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium last Saturday (6).

The visitors broke through in the 12th minute with Edu Bedia finding the back of the net. He latched on to a ball played in from the right and slotted it past Karamjit Singh.

Goa went 2-0 ahead in the 53rd minute.

From a Chennaiyin throw-in, Seriton Fernandes won the ball and passed it to an unmarked Ferran Corominas, who tapped it in for his third of the season.

Goa made it 3-0 against the run of play when Mourtada Fall headed home a pass from Corominas in the 80th minute. Chennaiyin pulled one back in the dying minutes when Eli Sabian netted from Andrea Orlandi’s ball.

Meanwhie Sergio Cidoncha’s injury minute strike salvaged a 2-2 draw for Jamshedpur FC against Bengaluru FC last Sunday (7).

Nishu Kumar’s stunning volley on the stroke of half-time put the hosts ahead. Gourav Mukhi then made history by becoming the youngest player in IPL history when he came on for Jamshedpur as a substitute and equalised.

Later Sunil Chhetri’s header in the 88th minute was cancelled out by Cidoncha’s effort in added time. Tim Cahill also made his long-awaited debut for Jamshedpur.

In other ISL action, Northeast United FC defeated former champions ATK by a solitary goal at the Saltlake Stadium last Thursday (4).

The home side, who kicked off the fifth ISL season with a 2-0 loss to Kerala Blasters, were reduced to 10 men in the 32nd minute when Sena Ralte was sent off for a sloppy challenge.

The visitors found the winner through Rowllin Borges from a 89th minute corner by Federico Gallego.
