Donald Trump Jr. has criticised Netflix’s decision to give Indian-American comedian Aziz Ansari, who was among the Hollywood celebrities swept by the #MeToo movement for sexual impropriety, a second chance.
On Sunday (30), Netflix’s vice president of original content Cindy Holland said the streaming network was interested in collaborating with Ansari for another season of his show, Master of None.
While speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Holland said Netflix “would be happy to make another season of ‘Master of None’ when Aziz is ready.”
The news caught Trump Jr.’s attention who blasted Hollywood’s double standards.
“I’m sure they’re chomping at the bit to give Rosanne and other conservatives a second chance … right?” Trump Jr. tweeted comparing Netflix’s handling of Ansari’s situation and how ABC dealt with TV star Roseanne Barr, whose show was cancelled after she penned a racist tweet against Balerie Jarrett, a former advisor to Barack Obama.
“Yet another example of the rules only applying one way.”
Ansari landed in controversy after an anonymous woman who went on a date with Ansari said he forced himself on her despite numerous hints that she wasn't interested.
The comedian has largely stayed away from the limelight ever since the controversy surfaced, but he addressed the scandal with a statement saying he thought the sexual encounter was consensual.
"It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned,” he said. "I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said."
Regarding the #MeToo movement, Ansari said he continued to “support the movement that is happening in our culture. It is necessary and long overdue."
