Delhi Capitals' Indian pace unit will have to punch above its weight against a formidable Gujarat Titans unit, which will start as overwhelming favourites in its first away match of the season, in Delhi on Tuesday (4).
The defending champions have all their bases covered despite Kane Williamson being ruled out of the tournament after a serious knee injury.
The hosts, on the other hand, are looking like an outfit that is bereft of a plan B as it became apparent in their 50-run thrashing at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants.
The primary worry is the composition of Indian pace attack, which mildly put is below par when Anrich Nortje isn't there to spearhead the attack.
Chetan Sakariya and Mukesh Kumar are sincere cricketers but both lack the pace and variation required to trouble international quality batters consistently.
They could well be lambs for slaughter against a Shubman Gill, who is in rampaging form or skipper Hardik Pandya, who would feast on friendly medium pacers day in and day out.
Khaleel Ahmed had a decent first game but his fielding has been an issue for years and those who have seen him at fielding sessions now know that he drops more catches than he takes.
The drop of Kyle Mayers had the most damaging effect in opening game for Delhi.
The only other notable pacer in the ranks is Ishant Sharma and even DC management knows well that picking him at his base price was more of showing respect to a 100-Test veteran rather than thinking of him as an asset.
Sharma can only be used as an 'impact player' but those who have watched DC training this season would vouch that he has lost pace and the skiddy effect is no longer there.
Nortje and his South African compatriot Lungi Ngidi, who both are still on national duty, are required at the earliest.
They will arrive only after the completion of Tuesday's game and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly and head coach Ricky Ponting will have to rejig the combination a bit.
In the batting department, skipper David Warner would like to see the Indian youngsters like Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan handle raw pace better than they did while encountering Mark Wood.
Both looked uncomfortable and short of ideas as one didn't have his bat come down in time while the other just managed to avoid a head injury while getting into a tangle, playing the ramp shot.
The duo will have to do much better if DC don't want to lose early momentum.
Against DC, Mohammed Shami and Pandya will pose a different challenge. With Alzarri Joseph, Yash Dayal and ever consistent Rashid Khan for company, it will be a challenge for DC batters.
DC's main problem is Indian bench strength and perhaps not having good enough ones to be substituted as 'impact players'.
The likes of Ripal Patel, Lalit Yadav and Aman Hakim Khan are decent domestic players but without X factor.
It will all depend on how well the foreign recruits shape up for Capitals.

13 dead as Indian Navy speedboat collides with ferry near Mumbai
Dec 19, 2024
THIRTEEN people have died after an Indian Navy speedboat collided with a ferry near Mumbai during engine trials, authorities said on Wednesday.
Maharashtra state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the fatalities and said over 100 people had been rescued.
The accident occurred as the ferry, carrying passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, was struck by the speedboat undergoing tests in the busy waters off Mumbai.
Videos shared by local media showed the speedboat cruising before sharply turning and ramming into the ferry, which later capsized.
"Doctors have declared 13 people dead," Fadnavis said. "I pay my heartfelt tributes to those who died in this accident. We share the grief of their families."
The Navy issued a statement saying that the speedboat had lost control due to an "engine malfunction" and expressed regret over the "tragic loss" of lives.
Among the 13 dead were one naval servicemember and two representatives from an equipment manufacturer participating in the trials. Two individuals with serious injuries were taken to the naval hospital.
"Search and rescue efforts were immediately launched," the Navy said, adding that four naval helicopters, 11 naval craft, and four boats from the Coast Guard and police were deployed for the operation.
Elephanta Island is a popular tourist destination, known for its ancient rock carvings, while the Gateway of India serves as a key departure point for ferries in the area.

Rolling the Digital Dice: Exploring the Appeal of Crypto Casinos in the UK
Dec 19, 2024
The gambling industry has always been at the forefront of innovation, adapting to changing times and technologies. In recent years, one of the most exciting developments has been the rise of crypto casinos. These platforms, which allow players to gamble using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, are revolutionising the way people in the UK enjoy online gambling.
This article delves into what makes crypto casinos appealing, their unique advantages, and why they are becoming a preferred choice for UK players.
What Are Crypto Casinos?
Crypto casinos are online gambling platforms that enable players to use cryptocurrencies for deposits, bets, and withdrawals. Unlike traditional casinos that rely on fiat currency, these platforms leverage blockchain technology to provide a more modern gambling experience.
Key Features of Crypto Casinos:
- Speedy Transactions: Cryptocurrencies enable near-instant deposits and withdrawals, eliminating the delays often associated with bank transfers or card payments.
- Enhanced Privacy: Players can gamble anonymously, protecting their personal and financial information.
- Global Accessibility: Crypto casinos aren’t tied to specific regions, allowing players in the UK to access games from anywhere in the world.
These features make crypto casinos an attractive option for tech-savvy gamblers seeking convenience, security, and a touch of innovation.
Why Are Crypto Casinos Gaining Popularity in the UK?
The UK has long been a hub for gambling, with a rich history of betting shops, casinos, and an ever-growing online gambling market. Crypto casinos add a new dimension to this landscape, appealing to players for several reasons.
- Transparency and Fairness: Blockchain technology, the backbone of cryptocurrencies, ensures that every transaction and game outcome is recorded and verifiable. Many crypto casinos offer provably fair games, where players can independently verify that the outcomes are not manipulated.
- Cost-Effective Transactions: Traditional gambling platforms often involve transaction fees for deposits and withdrawals. Cryptocurrencies, on the other hand, eliminate intermediaries, reducing costs for both players and operators. This allows players to retain more of their winnings.
- Evolving Payment Preferences: With the rise of digital wallets and contactless payments, UK consumers are embracing digital transactions. Cryptocurrencies are a natural extension of this trend, offering an alternative that combines convenience with advanced technology.
- Excitement of Innovation: Crypto casinos represent the cutting edge of gambling, attracting players who enjoy trying new technologies. From immersive games to global accessibility, these platforms deliver an experience that resonates with the modern gambler.
Challenges and Opportunities
While a crypto casino offer many benefits, they also present unique challenges that players in the UK should be aware of.
Potential Challenges:
- Regulatory Uncertainty: Cryptocurrencies are not yet fully regulated in the UK, which can create ambiguity around the legality of crypto casinos.
- Volatility: The value of cryptocurrencies can fluctuate significantly, impacting the real-world value of winnings or deposits.
- Technical Barriers: Players new to cryptocurrencies may find it challenging to set up a wallet or purchase Bitcoin.
Opportunities:
Despite these challenges, the opportunities presented by crypto casinos are immense. As more UK players adopt cryptocurrency, these platforms are likely to become more mainstream, offering a broader range of games and features. Additionally, as regulations evolve, crypto casinos could become even more secure and user-friendly.
The Future of Crypto Casinos in the UK
The growing appeal of crypto casinos in the UK is undeniable. With their transparency, speed, and innovation, these platforms are setting a new standard for online gambling. As cryptocurrencies become increasingly popular, crypto casinos are poised to become a central part of the UK gambling industry.
For players who value convenience, privacy, and cutting-edge technology, crypto casinos offer a unique way to enjoy their favourite games. However, it’s essential to approach these platforms responsibly, understanding the risks associated with gambling and cryptocurrency.
Final Thoughts
Crypto casinos are transforming the gambling experience in the UK, offering players a seamless and secure way to bet online. Whether you’re spinning virtual slots or playing a hand of poker, these platforms combine the thrill of gambling with the power of blockchain technology.
As the industry evolves, crypto casinos are likely to continue gaining traction among UK players. So, if you’re ready to roll the digital dice, now might be the perfect time to explore this exciting new frontier—but remember, always gamble responsibly.

Bank of England likely to hold interest rates at 4.75 per cent
Dec 19, 2024
THE BANK OF ENGLAND is expected to maintain its interest rate at 4.75 per cent on Thursday, even as the economy shows signs of slowing. Persistent inflation pressures are likely to prompt the central bank to stick to a "gradual" approach before reducing borrowing costs.
A Reuters poll of 71 economists unanimously predicted no change in rates for now. Most anticipate a quarter-point cut on 6 February, followed by three additional cuts by the end of 2025.
Financial markets, however, are less confident about the extent of rate cuts next year. Data released on Tuesday revealed an unexpected rise in wage growth, leading investors to price in only a 50 per cent chance of a rate cut in February and just two cuts by the end of 2025.
In contrast, the European Central Bank has already reduced rates by 1 percentage point this year and is expected to cut another point in 2025, responding to political and economic challenges in the eurozone.
The divergence in rate policies has widened the gap in yields between British and German 10-year government bonds to its largest since 1990.
The US Federal Reserve, which foresees only two rate cuts in 2024, reduced rates by a cumulative 1 percentage point on Wednesday—twice the pace of the Bank of England.
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey recently reaffirmed the bank's stance, stating that "a gradual approach to removing policy restraint remains appropriate." The bank’s November forecasts showed inflation staying slightly above its 2 per cent target until 2027, based on expectations of four rate cuts next year.
Despite this, the Bank of England has not explicitly confirmed whether it considers this rate-cutting pace the most likely scenario. Economists expect the December policy statement to reiterate the emphasis on gradualism.
An 8-1 vote by the Monetary Policy Committee to hold rates steady is expected, with Swati Dhingra likely to dissent in favour of faster cuts.
Inflation and wage growth concerns
Inflation in Britain remains a key concern. After peaking at 11.1 per cent in October 2022, consumer price inflation fell below the 2 per cent target in September this year but rose to 2.6 per cent in November. This exceeded the Bank of England's forecast of 2.4 per cent and remains the highest rate among G7 economies.
Services price inflation, a metric closely monitored by the Bank of England for medium-term pressures, stayed at 5 per cent.
Meanwhile, wage growth reached 5.2 per cent in the three months to October, far above the 3 per cent level considered consistent with 2 per cent inflation by most Monetary Policy Committee members.
The Bank of England is also assessing the impact of chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to introduce an additional £25 billion in employment taxes. This could either lead to further price increases or result in job and pay cuts.
Business sentiment has declined since the budget announcement on 30 October, with economic output contracting for two consecutive months for the first time since 2020. However, economists say it is too early to determine if this slowdown will significantly ease inflation.
"We don't think there is enough in the data to shift the MPC from its cautious, gradual tone," said Cathal Kennedy, an economist at RBC. He added that new forecasts at the Bank of England’s February meeting would play a critical role.
