MUMBAI INDIANS, armed with big-money signing Cameron Green, will bid for a record-extending sixth title when the Indian Premier League (IPL) starts on Friday (30), in what could be Chennai veteran MS Dhoni's swansong.
The 16th edition also returns to its pre-Covid glory days, with 74 matches scheduled at 12 venues over eight weeks.
In the opener at the world's biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, defending champions Gujarat Titans will play Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings.
England all-rounder Sam Curran returns to Punjab Kings after being bought for $2.23 million (£1.81m), making him the most expensive IPL player ever.
Green, 1.98 metres (6 feet and 6 inches) tall, joined IPL's most successful outfit Mumbai after he became the second-most expensive buy at $2.11m (£1.71m) in the December auction.
India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin called Green a "once-in-a-generation" cricketer after the batting all-rounder hit his maiden Test hundred in India earlier this month.
"I think he's a fantastic player. Just the raw materials for a person as tall as him, lovely levers, good batting sense, can bowl and really hit the deck well, moves pretty well on the field," Ashwin said.
Mumbai, led by India captain Rohit Sharma, will be without injured pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah but have been boosted by the return of England fast bowler Jofra Archer, who missed last season due to injury.
Dhoni and Stokes
Chennai are not far behind Mumbai with four titles - and are five-time runners-up - and Dhoni's towering presence as wicketkeeper-batsman and captain has been key.
Dhoni, 41, remains a huge star more than two years after his international retirement.
He said he owed a "thank you" to his Chennai fans after last year's IPL, which was held in just two cities in the group stage.
Dhoni apart, the team's success will depend on all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali and England Test skipper Ben Stokes, who was bought by the franchise for $1.96m (£1.59m).
According to media reports, Stokes is also being considered as a possible successor to Dhoni as Chennai captain.
Australia's David Warner, South Africans Aiden Markram and Faf du Plessis are the three overseas captains in this IPL.
Warner will lead Delhi Capitals in the absence of the injured Rishabh Pant, who suffered injuries in a car crash in December, as the team again chase their first ever IPL title.
Markram will lead 2016 winners Sunrisers Hyderabad while fellow South African Du Plessis continues as Bangalore skipper after Kohli stepped down.
The league, which began in 2008, has grown to be the world's richest cricket tournament and a huge revenue earner for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Sam Asghari opens up about relationship with Britney Spears and life after divorce
Jan 28, 2025
Sam Asghari has opened up about the complexities of his relationship with Britney Spears, shedding light on the impact of her conservatorship during their time together. Speaking on Kate and Oliver Hudson’s Sibling Revelry podcast, the actor and model described his seven-year relationship with the pop icon as both challenging and transformative.
Their romance, which began in 2016, initially felt promising, but things changed once Sam fully understood the details of Britney’s conservatorship. The legal arrangement, overseen by her father Jamie Spears, controlled many aspects of Britney’s life, including her finances and personal decisions. Reflecting on this, Sam, who immigrated to the United States from Iran at the age of 12, admitted he was taken aback. “I thought I was in America. What do you mean someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?” he said.

Sam revealed that he expected the challenges of fame and money to be the hardest parts of dating someone in the entertainment industry, but the real difficulties came from the people around Britney. “One of the hardest things to deal with is when the people closest to you take advantage,” he shared. “It was the most difficult and weird experience I’ve ever witnessed.”
Despite these challenges, Sam remained supportive of Britney as she fought to end her 13-year conservatorship, which was terminated in November 2021. The arrangement had placed significant restrictions on her life, including decisions about her health and her ability to start a family with Sam.
The couple married in June 2022, but their relationship ended just 14 months later. They finalised their divorce in May 2024. Despite their split, Sam looks back on their time together with gratitude. “I’m always going to be grateful to have been a part of her life,” he said. “We learnt so much, and it was a beautiful experience.”
Since the divorce, Sam has begun a new chapter, publicly dating actress Brooke Irvine. Reflecting on his Hollywood journey, he shared, “You just have to stay positive and grounded. Focus on the truth rather than other people’s opinions.”
While their relationship may have ended, Sam acknowledges the lessons it brought and remains appreciative of the time he shared with Britney.

Trial for Bhim Kohli’s death begins 17 Feb after teens deny charges
Jan 28, 2025
A 13-year-old girl has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Bhim Kohli, 80, who was injured in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, while walking his dog on 1 September last year. Kohli died in hospital the following day.
The girl, who cannot be named due to her age, appeared at Leicester Crown Court last week. She denied the charge and was granted conditional bail until the trial begins on 17 February, reported BBC.
A 15-year-old boy, who was 14 at the time of the incident, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and manslaughter during an earlier hearing in December. He remains in custody.
The trial is expected to last up to six weeks and will be heard by a High Court judge.
Kohli, described by his family as a “loving husband, dad, and grandad,” lived near Franklin Park with his wife, Satinder.
A longtime resident of the area, he worked in Leicester’s textile industry for decades, running a knitwear factory.
Despite his age and osteoporosis, Kohli maintained an active lifestyle, growing vegetables in his allotments, which he often shared with friends and neighbours.
An inquest into his death in November listed a neck injury as the preliminary cause.
