Lalit Modi in tax spotlight

SWITZERLAND on Tuesday (31) named former chief of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Lalit Modi and his wife Minal as among those being sought by Indian authorities.

In two separate notifications issued on Tuesday on “assist- ance” matters, the Swiss Feder- al Tax Administration (FTA) also gave Modi and his wife 10 days for the “exercise of the right to be heard”.

Without divulging further details, the FTA notifications in Berne asked the couple to choose an authorised person in Switzerland within 10 days to receive notifications.

There was no comment from Modi or his wife.

In the past, some Indians have been named in similar notifications after the country’s authorities approached the Swiss FTA for information on tax-related investigations.

Modi, the former IPL commissioner, is believed to beliving in London after he left India in 2010. He faces a money-laundering probe in India and the country’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has asked the Ministry of External Affairs to seek his extradition from the UK.

“The Enforcement Directorate has sent us an extradition request. It is currently being examined by our legal experts. Once we make sure that it is in good shape, we will send it to the UK for consideration,” Exter nal Affairs Ministry spokes- person Vikas Swarup said. Modi has denied any wrong- doing in the case.

The ED wants to investigate Modi in a case relating to an IPL match after a complaint was registered against him and others under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

In August last year, the agency had moved Interpol to get a red corner notice issued against Modi but the international police body has not obliged yet.
