THERE is a "very real possibility" that Pakistan will boycott this year's World Cup in India if they lose rights to host the Asia Cup, the chairman of the country's cricket board Najam Sethi said.
Bilateral cricket has been a casualty of the soured political relations between India and Pakistan over the last decade and the neighbouring countries now play each other only in multi-team events in neutral venues.
India, citing safety concerns, have ruled out travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup in September and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered to let them play their matches in the United Arab Emirates in what has been dubbed a "hybrid model".
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to deliver a formal response to the offer, Sethi said India wanted the entire tournament moved out of Pakistan.
That could have serious ramifications for the 50-overs World Cup in India this year as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, he added.
"They want all the matches in a neutral venue," he said in a Zoom interview.
"BCCI should take a good, rational decision so that we don't have any problems going forward.
"India should not be looking at a situation where we end up boycotting the Asia Cup and also the World Cup, and then India ends up boycotting the Champions Trophy.
"That will be a huge mess."
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have also come out against playing in the UAE, citing the heat and logistics issues, heightening speculation in local media that the Asian Cricket Council may look to move the entire tournament out of Pakistan.
Sethi said that was "not acceptable" and reaffirmed that Pakistan may boycott the World Cup if that happened.
"That's a very real possibility, of course," he added.
Should India agree to the hybrid model for the Asia Cup, Sethi said, Pakistan would expect reciprocal terms for their team at the World Cup in October and November.
"We also have security concerns for our team in India," he said. "So let Pakistan play its matches in Dhaka or Mirpur, or UAE or in Sri Lanka.
"This is the solution going forward, until such time that India agrees to play Pakistan, in Pakistan and outside Pakistan, bilaterally."
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah was not immediately available for comment but neither the Indian board nor the International Cricket Council (ICC) have said they are even considering staging any World Cup matches outside India.
Sethi said Pakistan, World Cup champions in 1992, was a top cricketing nation which should not be ignored and that they would have to talk to the ICC about the Asia Cup problem.
"The ICC should step in but my sense is India would not like the ICC to step in, especially during the Asia Cup," he said.
The ICC was not immediately available for comment.
Pakistan was starved of international cricket after a 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore and had to lobby hard to convince top teams to resume touring the country over the last couple of years.
"We worked so hard to bring international cricket back to Pakistan," Sethi said.
"Every major country has toured Pakistan in the last few years. You name them, they've all been there. They all appreciated the security arrangements. That's not a problem anymore."
Citing the hype surrounding any meeting between India and Pakistan, Sethi blamed the BCCI's "stubbornness" for failing to turn it into the greatest rivalry in cricket.
"The India-Pakistan game is the biggest game in town. It's bigger than Australia v England, it's bigger than India v Australia. How can we jeopardise that by a stubbornness?" he said.
"The Indian bridge team has been to Pakistan, the Indian kabaddi team has been to Pakistan, the Indian baseball team has been to Pakistan ...
"So what's going on? Why can't the Indian cricket team come to Pakistan?"

Champions League: Liverpool extend winning run; Real Madrid back on track
Dec 11, 2024
MOHAMED SALAH'S penalty maintained Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the Champions League on Tuesday, while Real Madrid returned to winning ways with a victory over Serie A leaders Atalanta.
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain secured a crucial win against Salzburg, and Bayer Leverkusen edged past Inter Milan to move into second place in their group standings. Aston Villa, participating in the competition for the first time in 41 years, continued their impressive form with a 3-2 win over Leipzig, leaving them in third place.
Under the competition’s revamped format, the top eight teams advance directly to the last 16, while teams finishing ninth to 24th will enter a play-off round.
In Spain, Salah scored a decisive penalty in the 63rd minute to help Liverpool overcome Girona, debutants in the tournament. The result gave the Premier League leaders their sixth consecutive win in the group stage. Despite the win, Liverpool coach Arne Slot expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.
“If you ask me about all six games, I’m really pleased with all the results... (but) I’m far from pleased about the performance tonight,” Slot told reporters. “(We had) hardly any control at all over the game, maybe the second half was a bit better but then I’m trying to be positive.”
Salah’s goal was his 50th in the Champions League, placing him joint 10th on the competition’s all-time scoring list alongside Filippo Inzaghi. The Egyptian winger, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has scored 16 goals across all competitions this season, proving crucial to Liverpool’s success.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, recovered from their 2-0 loss to Liverpool in their previous match. Kylian Mbappe gave the Spanish side an early lead against Atalanta, but Charles de Ketelaere equalised with a penalty in first-half stoppage time. Goals from Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham secured a 3-2 victory, lifting Real to 18th place on nine points.
PSG, struggling in 25th place before the match, claimed a much-needed 3-0 win over Salzburg. The victory pushed the French champions into 24th position, the final spot for the play-offs.
In other results, Bayern Munich defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1, and Bayer Leverkusen became the first team to score against Inter Milan this season with a 1-0 win. French side Brest continued their strong debut campaign in European football with a 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven, moving them into fifth place.
Wednesday’s matches include Manchester City’s trip to Juventus and Barcelona’s visit to Borussia Dortmund.

ICC penalises Siraj, Head for heated exchange during Adelaide Test
Dec 10, 2024
INDIA fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and Australia batsman Travis Head were fined for misconduct on Monday following an on-field exchange during the second Test in Adelaide.
Siraj was fined 20 per cent of his match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after he gave Head a send-off following his dismissal for 140 in Australia’s first innings.
The ICC said Siraj admitted to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.” He also received one demerit point.
Head, who reacted to the send-off, was also sanctioned with a demerit point. His charge related to the "abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee."
The exchange occurred after Siraj dismissed Head and pointed toward the Australia dressing room.
Despite the incident, the players appeared to reconcile during India’s second innings when Siraj came out to bat.
Australia won the day-night Test by 10 wickets, levelling the five-match series at 1-1.

Chelsea come from behind to beat Tottenham 4-3 and go second
Dec 09, 2024
COLE PALMER converted two penalties as Chelsea overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Tottenham 4-3 on Sunday, moving to second place in the Premier League standings.
Early goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski gave Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou a strong start. However, Chelsea capitalised on defensive lapses to extend their unbeaten Premier League streak to seven matches.
Jadon Sancho’s long-range strike gave Chelsea a foothold before Palmer scored twice from the penalty spot, with Enzo Fernandez adding another goal in a dominant second-half display. Chelsea are now four points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
"Mentally we showed how strong we are," said Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who maintained that his team is not in the title race. However, he added, "100 percent we are ahead of my expectation. In terms of the way we play on the ball, off the ball, and in terms of the results."
Tottenham's struggles continued, with Son Heung-min’s stoppage-time goal offering little relief. Spurs, who sit 11th in the table, have won only once in their last seven matches.
Postecoglou, already under pressure following a 1-0 loss to Bournemouth on Thursday, faced criticism from fans. Despite notable wins earlier in the season against Manchester City and Manchester United, Tottenham's defensive frailties were evident as Chelsea capitalised.
Solanke opened the scoring by turning in Brennan Johnson's cross, and Kulusevski doubled the lead with a low shot past Robert Sanchez. However, Cristian Romero’s injury and subsequent substitution disrupted Tottenham’s rhythm.
Sancho's goal sparked Chelsea’s comeback before Palmer, Fernandez, and a second penalty ensured their victory. Tottenham's defensive errors, including penalties conceded by Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr, proved costly.
"I thought both penalties were poor decisions by us; we have to show more discipline," said Postecoglou.
Son’s late goal narrowed the margin, but Chelsea held firm to secure the win.

Australia beat India by 10 wickets to level series at Adelaide
Dec 08, 2024
AUSTRALIA defeated India by 10 wickets in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday, levelling the five-match series 1-1.
The hosts delivered a dominant performance with both bat and ball to secure victory on day three of the pink-ball Test.
Chasing a modest target of 19, openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney easily reached the score without losing a wicket.
India, who started the day at 128-5, could only manage 175 in their second innings before being bowled out.
Rishabh Pant, resuming on 28, fell in the opening over to Mitchell Starc without adding to his score.
Pat Cummins dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin (7) and Harshit Rana (0), while Nitish Kumar Reddy made a fighting 42 before being removed by Scott Boland.
Boland also claimed the final wicket of Mohammed Siraj (7) to end India’s innings. Cummins finished with 5-57, Boland took 3-51, and Starc claimed eight wickets across the match.
Cummins praised his team's turnaround after their loss in the series opener, highlighting Travis Head's game-changing century. "He loves batting here," Cummins said. "The ball does a bit more under lights, but the big thing was getting a big lead."
For India, the defeat added to their struggles at Adelaide, recalling their 2020 collapse when they were bowled out for their lowest-ever Test score of 36.
Rohit Sharma acknowledged his side’s failure to capitalise on opportunities. "We didn't play well enough to win the game. Looking forward to the next Test," he said.
The hosts’ commanding win was built on a strong first-innings lead after bowling India out for 180.
Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored with 42, but Mitchell Starc’s 6-48 derailed India’s innings.
Travis Head's 140 and Marnus Labuschagne’s 64 propelled Australia to 337 in reply, setting up a decisive lead.
India's bowlers struggled to exploit the conditions with the pink ball, allowing Australia to bat through the challenging evening session on day one with minimal damage.
In contrast, Australia’s experienced pace attack dismantled India's top order under the lights on day two, leaving the visitors with little chance to recover.
The series now moves to the Gabba in Brisbane, where the third Test begins on Saturday.

Bumrah’s Brilliance: Travis Head lauds Indian pacer ahead of Adelaide test
Dec 06, 2024
AUSTRALIA’S batsmen were dominated by Jasprit Bumrah in Perth, but Travis Head said they were looking forward to another round against the Indian spearhead, who he believes will be come to regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in history.
Captaining India in place of Rohit Sharma, Bumrah took eight wickets to lead the tourists to a resounding 295-run win in the series-opener at Perth Stadium.
He could prove even more of a handful with the pink ball in the day-night Test starting in Adelaide Oval on Friday (6).
Head, who top-scored for Australia with 89 in the second innings in Perth before nicking off to Bumrah, said his batting teammates were working on different plans to handle the quick bowler.
“They are not coming to me for batting tips, that’s for sure,” he told reporters in Adelaide on Monday (2).
“Everyone goes about it in different ways. We’re all supporting each other.
“Jasprit’s going to go down as probably one of the greatest fast bowlers to play the game. I think we’re finding that at the moment, how challenging he can be, and it’s nice to play against that.
“It’s going to be nice to look back at your career and tell the grandkids that you faced him, so not a bad series to be playing with him.”
Head dismissed talk of a rift between the batters and bowlers in the Australian team, which was sparked by comments paceman Josh Hazlewood made as the hosts stared down the barrel of defeat in Perth.
Asked how Australia could turn things around against India, Hazlewood said: “You probably have to ask one of the batters that question.
“I’m sort of relaxing and trying to get a bit of physio and a bit of treatment, and I’m probably looking mostly towards the next Test and what plans we can do against these batters.”
Head, however, said there was no divide in the camp.
“This team’s been together for three to four years … the guys get along really well. We hold high expectations for both sides and it’s a very individualised sport.
“The batters want to hold our own. We know how good our bowlers have been for us in the past, and they’ve gotten us out of trouble a lot.”
Hazlewood was last Saturday (30) ruled out of the second Test, with seamers Sean Abbott and Brendon Doggett added to their squad.
The right-armer, who took five wickets in Perth, has what Cricket Australia (CA) described as “a low-grade left side injury”. “Hazlewood will remain with the group in Adelaide to prepare for the remainder of the series,” CA added.
While the uncapped Abbott and Doggett were drafted in, Hazelwood’s absence is likely to open the door for Scott Boland to play. The bowler, who was already part of the squad, played the last of his 10 Tests in July 2023 against England at Headingley.
There are also question marks around all-rounder Mitchell Marsh who, like Hazlewood, pulled up sore following the Perth loss. Beau Webster was last Thursday (28) called into the squad as cover for him.
