AFTER the Sandringham summit with Princes Charles, William and Harry, the Queen said that “my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family”.
But questions about the treatment of Meghan remain. Most papers in Britain are blaming the Duchess of Sussex for the “abdication crisis”.
However, the New York Times has touched a raw nerve by suggesting that Meghan is being driven out of the UK by racism.
Its editorial comment summed up: “Good for Meghan and Harry. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are right to blaze their own trail.”
“In this story, Prince Harry and Meghan should not be lamented as defectors from the old order, but celebrated as ... modern royals renouncing some level of privilege to seek their fortune in the real world,” it added.
“May they live happily ever after.” The paper also carried an article by the author Afua Hirsch, herself a black Briton, who argued that Meghan’s “treatment has proved what many of us have always known: no matter how beautiful you are, whom you marry,... charities you support, ... how much money you accumulate or what good deeds you perform, in this society racism will still follow you”.
