Review: The Jasmine Indian Afternoon Tea at Taj 51 Buckingham Gate

By Lauren Codling

THE Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences already boasts an array of Indian influenced cuisine within their grounds, including their Michelin-starred restaurant Quilon, so the introduction of an afternoon tea, inspired by the sights and sounds of India, is a very much welcome addition to an establishment already so reminiscent of the subcontinent.

The Jasmine Indian Afternoon Tea, a brand new addition to a number of other themed teas the eatery offers, evokes the traditions of the Indian dining culture with an novel spin on the traditional afternoon tea experience.

Typical British-Indian treats, such as bhajis or samosas, were expected but the Taj knew better than to rely on the stereotypical view of Indian cuisine. Instead, authentic-inspired Indian snacks and treats were served on beautifully designed platters and plates which would be a treat for any keen Instagrammer.

After a warm welcome with a wide selection of eastern and western teas to choose from, guests can look forward to a sever guiding them through the bites on offer.

The plates are overwhelmed with colour; from the rose-tinged scones, complete with mango compote and cinnamon clotted cream, to the intricately rolled exotic sandwiches made up of beetroot bread stuffed with spiced creamed cheese and kachumbar salad, the dishes showcase a startling amount of aesthetically pleasing food.

The tastes are vastly diverse in each small bite; the chicken tikka pantheras will be a treat for spice lovers, whilst the flavourful creamy fish masala choux rolls with coriander is sure to please any guests who have a taste for rich cuisine.

There are also plenty of vegetarian options for guests to enjoy.

If this reviewer has one qualm about the experience at the Taj, it would only have to be a slight niggle with the surroundings. The establishment hosts several other themed afternoon teas, which means there is an inevitable curiosity about what your neighbour may be experiencing.

It also meant the south Asian vibe could not be fully fleshed out – background music evocative of the subcontinent or more decorative hints not just set out on the table would have brought the experience full circle.

Despite this, The Jasmine Indian Afternoon Tea would be a treat for any food lover who is keen to experience the authentic, rich tastes of India.

We give The Jasmine Indian Afternoon Tea four and a half out of five stars.

The new Jasmine Indian tea is £40 per person and is served every day at Kona, Tai 51  from Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences from 12:30 – 18:00 hrs.

Thingvellir National Park, located in Iceland, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its rich cultural and natural history. Established in 1930, it is one of Iceland’s most iconic destinations. The park’s remarkable landscapes, historical significance, and geological wonders make it an essential stop for travelers.

Historical Significance

Thingvellir holds immense historical importance as the site where the Althing, the Icelandic parliament, was established in 930 AD. This assembly, which continued until 1798, marks the foundation of Icelandic governance and law. Visitors can explore the Logberg (Law Rock), where the Law Speaker proclaimed laws during assemblies. The park also preserves the memory of key events in Iceland’s history, including the adoption of Christianity in 1000 AD and the country’s journey toward independence.
