Sanjay Gupta to take the Shootout franchise forward

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta is known for helming a series of gangster drams over the years. Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004) and Shootout At Lokhandwala (2007) are some of the high-octane gangster films which established him as one of the finest filmmakers in this genre.

Shootout At Lokhandwala, starring Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi, Tusshar Kapoor, Rohit Roy, Amitabh Bachchan and Dia Mirza, is one of the most successful films of Gupta’s filmmaker career.

After the humongous success of the movie, Gupta decided to develop it into a franchise and came up with its sequel Shootout At Wadala in the year 2013. Starring John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut in important roles, the sequel turned out to be an even bigger hit at the box-office.

If reports are to be believed, Sanjay Gupta is now planning to bring a third instalment to the franchise. A source confirmed the development to a portal. “Sanjay Gupta will be continuing the third instalment of the Shootout franchise. The film will be backed by Balaji Motion Pictures. The filmmaker will kick-start this after his current Mumbai Saga,” informs the source.

The filmmaker is, meanwhile, busy with the pre-production work of his next gangster film Mumbai Saga. T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar is bankrolling the project under his production house.

Mumbai Saga, which was officially announced a couple of months ago, is set in the 1980’s-1990’s Mumbai. It boasts of an impressive line-up of actors including the likes of John Abraham, Emraan Hashmi, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, Prateik Babbar, Gulshan Grover, Rohit Roy, and Amole Gupte.

"After 25 years and 17 films, I had to give my audience something bigger and better. Mumbai Saga is by far my most ambitious film which needed a visionary producer," Gupta had earlier said in a statement.

Oscar rule change confirms AI-generated films are now eligible for top awards

The Oscars have opened the door to films made with the help of artificial intelligence. In a move that aligns with the changing times in the film industry, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed that movies using AI tools can still qualify for top awards, but there’s a catch.

According to new rules released this week, the use of AI won’t automatically boost or reduce a film’s chance of earning a nomination. What matters most, the Academy said, is the extent of human creativity involved in the process. The message is clear: technology can assist, but it can’t replace the heart of a story, the people who tell it.

Green Day hits back at Charli XCX’s ‘headliner’ claim with cheeky Coachella comeback

During the first weekend of Coachella 2025, Charli XCX drew attention beyond the stage when she showed up to an afterparty wearing a sash that said “Miss Should Have Been a Headliner.” The accessory quickly got people talking, with many seeing it as a subtle jab at Green Day, who headlined the Saturday night slot right after her set.

The pop star’s statement quickly caught attention online and fans were divided. Some saw it as a playful flex, others took it as shade aimed at the veteran rock band. Green Day, true to their punk roots, didn’t stay quiet for long. During their Weekend 2 performance, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong acknowledged the moment by donning a green “Brat” cap as a nod to Charli’s latest album of the same name. It was subtle, but unmistakably in on the joke.

Kamal Haasan’s ‘banana’ joke on Trisha sparks backlash, internet split over offensive humour

During a recent event for the upcoming film Thug Life, Kamal Haasan’s casual remark aimed at co-star Trisha Krishnan stirred more than just laughter. What was likely meant as a light-hearted moment has now triggered debate across social media, with opinions split on whether the joke crossed a line.

It happened during a promotional interview when Trisha was asked about her favourite food. She mentioned a boiled banana dish but struggled to recall its original name, ‘pazham pori’ or banana fritters. Kamal jumped in with a quip: “She doesn’t know the name but likes putting it in her mouth,” followed by a pat on her knee. Trisha laughed it off in the moment, but the clip quickly made its way online and not everyone was amused.
