Sonakshi Sinha shares her thoughts on Bollywood’s gender pay gap

There is a long list of actresses who have contributed as much to the growth and popularity of Indian cinema as male stars. But do they receive the same paycheques for their work as their male counterparts? No. Gender pay gap in Bollywood, or any other film producing industry for that matter, has been there since forever, but the issue has received more and more attention in the past few years. The latest actresses to shine light on the issue of low wages is Sonakshi Sinha.

During a conversation with a popular entertainment portal, when Sonakshi Sinha was asked to share her thoughts on pay disparity in Bollywood, she said that she agreed that actresses are underpaid in the industry as compared to male stars.

"We have a long way to go. Even for the movies helmed by women, I have been a part of a few, nowhere is the pay structure as close to what a male superstar would get. Honestly, that has a lot to do with the audience too. I think Taapsee said that if the audiences come and watch our solo movies as much as they go and watch the male superstars, we can also charge that much because our returns will be that much. But the fact is that we don't have that kind of audience as of now. As much as we talk and would love to have equality, the fact is there is a long way to go,” said the actress.

Meanwhile, Sonakshi Sinha is looking forward to the release of her much-awaited film Dabangg 3. Also starring Salman Khan and Kichcha Sudeep in lead roles, the cop drama has been directed by Prabhudheva. The movie is scheduled to roll into theatres on 20th December, 2019.
