SRI LANKA Cricket slashed ticket prices for the Asia Cup by up to 95 per cent on Sunday (10) after costs were hiked 40-fold and matches were played in near-empty stadiums.
Tickets for one-day internationals in crisis-hit Sri Lanka have generally cost around Rs 250 ($0.78) previously.
That was hiked to Rs 10,000 ($31.02) for the Asia Cup, which is being organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board despite largely taking place in Sri Lanka, and fans in the cricket-mad island country have stayed away in droves.
Barely 7,000 home supporters turned out for Sri Lanka's Super Four clash against Bangladesh on Saturday (9) at the 35,000-capacity R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, leaving the hosts facing the embarrassing sight of ranks of empty seats.
In an attempt to lure them back, Sri Lanka Cricket announced a price cut of up to 95 per cent on Sunday for all remaining Super Four games, including the marquee clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, with tickets now costing as little as Rs 500 ($1.55).
The stratospheric price hikes had infuriated fans.
Sri Lanka endured months of food, fuel and medicine shortages last year after a foreign exchange crunch, which sparked widespread protests culminating in the ouster of its president.
The 50-over Asia Cup is a precursor to the upcoming ODI World Cup, and most of the matches were moved to Sri Lanka after India refused to tour Pakistan due to political tensions.
"Pakistan have kept the ticket pricing too high and that has kept fans away from the stadiums," a local Sri Lankan official said on condition of anonymity.
"Ticket costs... are way beyond the reach of a common man," he added.
"This is bizarre. We tried to reason with the PCB but they had their reasons as they have lost out on money, maybe."
The PCB did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
'Love of cricket'
There were still hardly any spectators on Sunday for the India-Pakistan game, for which grandstand tickets were priced at a whopping Rs 64,000 ($200).
And fans were not amused.
"This is not good. We love cricket but cannot pay so much to watch a match," Supun Vijayarathnam, a tea seller outside the Colombo stadium, said.
"I have watched many matches here for just 100 and 200 rupees. But this time I have to watch it on TV and just hear the noise, which of course is less."
Fans travelled from both India and Pakistan for the hotly anticipated clash after their first meeting was washed out in Pallekele.
"We paid 16,000 Sri Lankan rupees for this game. We were there in Kandy as well and had to pay 15,000 there," Arun Kumar Yadav, from the northern Indian city of Lucknow, said.
"The prices are too high from the last time that we came here," added the 35-year-old. "But it's the love of cricket."
A street vendor selling India and Pakistan jerseys and flags said that despite the game being a blockbuster, there were "fewer fans and the buzz is less".

Boxing Day: Liverpool eye win; Arsenal and Spurs face key tests
Dec 26, 2024
Liverpool enter the festive period atop the Premier League table for the first time since the 2020/21 season.
On Boxing Day, they host Leicester City, aiming to maintain their four-point lead over second-placed Chelsea.
Mohamed Salah’s outstanding form has been instrumental in Liverpool’s campaign.
The Egyptian forward is the first Premier League player to record double figures in both goals (15) and assists (11) before Christmas, bolstering Liverpool’s hopes of extending their lead.
Leicester, managed by Ruud van Nistelrooy, are struggling despite an initial boost under their new boss. They have collected just one point from their last three matches, conceding nine goals.
Currently sitting two points above the relegation zone, Leicester face an uphill battle at Anfield, a venue where they last secured a win in 2000.
Arsenal, meanwhile, head into their Friday match against Ipswich with a significant setback. Bukayo Saka, who has contributed nine goals and 13 assists this season, suffered a hamstring injury during their recent 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace.
Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "It's going to be a really good exercise for all of us to think about ways to overcome another challenge." Arsenal, third in the table, will look to Gabriel Martinelli and others to step up in Saka's absence.
Tottenham, recovering from a heavy 6-3 loss to Liverpool, face a tough away fixture against Nottingham Forest.
Forest, under Nuno Espirito Santo, have climbed to fourth in the league, winning seven of their last 10 games.
Known for their defensive solidity, they have conceded fewer goals than all but Liverpool and Arsenal this season. Reflecting on his team’s strong form, Nuno remarked, "You never know what's going to happen in the game, but we’re showing we can compete."
Elsewhere, Manchester City and Manchester United, both enduring challenging spells, seek to find momentum in their respective matches.
City host Everton, while United travel to Wolves. Chelsea, in second place, face Fulham, looking to close the gap on Liverpool.
The festive fixtures mark a critical juncture in the Premier League, with teams navigating packed schedules and injuries as they aim to strengthen their positions heading into the new year.

Head fit for Boxing Day Test against India, Boland to replace Hazlewood
Dec 25, 2024
AUSTRALIA’s Travis Head has been declared fit for the Boxing Day Test against India, providing a significant boost to the team.
Skipper Pat Cummins confirmed Head's availability on Wednesday after the batsman passed final fitness checks following a minor thigh strain.
“Trav is good to go, so he will play. He just ticked off some final things today and yesterday,” Cummins said. “No stress, no worries about injury for Trav, so he will go into the game fully fit. I don’t think you’ll see too much management of him through the game, maybe around fielding if he’s a bit uncomfortable, but he’s fully fit.”
Head, Australia’s number five batsman, is the leading scorer in the series, with 409 runs at an average of 81.80, including centuries in Adelaide and Brisbane.
Reflecting on Head's form, Cummins added, “It feels like the last 12 months he’s been in this unbelievable vein of form and he just keeps going. He’s hitting the ball really cleanly and you can see the pressure he shifts back onto the opposition, literally from the first ball he walks out there. I’m loving that he is in our team. Long may it continue.”
The five-match series is tied 1-1. India claimed a 295-run win in Perth, while Australia bounced back with a 10-wicket victory in Adelaide. The rain-affected third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw.
Cummins also confirmed Scott Boland will replace the injured Josh Hazlewood. In another change, 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas will make his Test debut, replacing Nathan McSweeney. Konstas becomes Australia’s youngest Test debutant since Cummins made his debut in 2011.
Reflecting on Konstas’s inclusion, Cummins said, “I just remember being really excited, and it’s similar for Sammy this week. There’s a level of naivety that you just want to go out and play, like you do when you were a kid in the back yard... That’s the message to Sam.”
Australia's playing XI: Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland.

Rohit Sharma considers playing second spinner in Melbourne
Dec 24, 2024
INDIA captain Rohit Sharma remained non-committal about his team’s lineup for the Boxing Day Test against Australia, indicating that a second spinner could be included.
The match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is expected to see temperatures soar to 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The pitch is predicted to favour fast bowlers, according to the curator earlier this week, but Rohit hinted at the possibility of a change in strategy.
"Whatever we have to do to make the best possible XI in these conditions, we will do that -- whether that is playing an extra spinner or not," Rohit said during a media interaction.
With off-spinning allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from international cricket after the Brisbane Test, Ravindra Jadeja is likely to retain his spot in the playing XI. Washington Sundar is another spin option being considered.
India’s pace attack has largely been carried by Jasprit Bumrah, who has performed strongly throughout the series.
However, the other fast bowlers have struggled to provide consistent support. Speedster Akash Deep replaced Harshit Rana after the latter’s poor performance in Brisbane and is expected to play alongside Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy, should India stick with three pacers.
Despite the mixed performance from the pace attack, Rohit expressed confidence in his bowlers. “When you talk about our bowling unit, I have enough faith in all our bowlers to get the job done,” he said. “Anyone can have tough games or series. It doesn’t mean they are not good enough to perform at this level.”
Rohit himself has been under scrutiny, having missed the first Test in Perth for personal reasons. In the subsequent games in Adelaide and Brisbane, he batted at number six instead of opening, allowing Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to stay at the top of the order.
There is speculation that Rohit may open in Melbourne, but he deflected questions on the topic. “Let’s not worry about that,” he said. “I think who bats where is something that we need to figure out within ourselves. Whatever it takes for our team to look good or gives us the best chance to succeed, we’ll try and do that.”
The series is currently tied at 1-1. India secured a dominant 295-run victory in Perth but suffered a 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide. The third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw due to persistent rain.

India's top order under scrutiny ahead of Boxing Day Test
Dec 23, 2024
A HARD-FOUGHT draw in Brisbane has provided the Indian team with some relief and renewed hope that their underperforming top order will improve in the remaining two Tests of the series against Australia.
India managed to escape defeat in the third Test at the Gabba, which was affected by rain, despite being in trouble at 74-5 in reply to Australia’s 445. Ravindra Jadeja’s crucial performance and a 47-run last-wicket partnership between Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah helped India avoid the follow-on.
With the five-match series level at 1-1, India now turn their focus to the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. However, the inconsistency of the top order remains a significant concern. In five completed innings so far, India have managed an opening stand of more than 12 runs just once.
The standout opening partnership came in Perth, where Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul shared a 201-run stand to set up India’s victory in the series opener. Poor starts in the other innings have resulted in three scores below 200, including two in the Adelaide Test, which Australia won by 10 wickets.
India captain Rohit Sharma expressed optimism ahead of the Melbourne Test, saying conditions there might suit the batters better. "Whatever happened today, it gave us confidence ahead of Melbourne," Sharma said. "We’re aware we have to start from scratch, conditions are different there, and the ball may not move as much."
Rohit has been struggling with form, having scored just one fifty in his last 13 Test innings. After missing the first Test, he has returned as a middle-order batter but has managed a highest score of 10 in three innings. "I have not batted well, there is no harm in accepting that," Rohit said.
India need to win both remaining Tests to qualify directly for the World Test Championship final. Australia, meanwhile, require two wins and a draw from their next four Tests to secure their spot.
Shami ruled out
Seamer Mohammed Shami will not feature in the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to swelling in his left knee, the BCCI confirmed.
"Based on the current medical assessment, the BCCI medical team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads," the statement read.
Concerns over practice pitches
The Indian team has raised concerns over the uneven bounce of the practice pitches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which led to an injury scare for skipper Rohit Sharma.
MCG curator Matt Page defended the pitches, stating that standard protocols had been followed.
Konstas prepares for a possible debut
Australia’s Sam Konstas is preparing for a potential debut in the fourth Test.
The 19-year-old said advice from Shane Watson, encouraging him to "back himself and be fearless," has boosted his confidence.

India to play Champions Trophy matches in Dubai
Dec 23, 2024
PAKISTAN has selected Dubai as the neutral venue for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy after India declined to travel to Pakistan for the tournament.
The decision was announced on Sunday by officials from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The International Cricket Council (ICC) had earlier stated that all matches involving India in the eight-team event would be played outside Pakistan.
This arrangement follows a month-long standoff between the two cricketing rivals, which resulted in a compromise.
Under the agreement, Pakistan will also play at neutral venues for any events hosted by India until 2027.
A PCB spokesperson confirmed the decision, saying, "Pakistan has chosen Dubai as the neutral venue for the Champions Trophy, and it has been conveyed to the ICC officially, meaning India will play its matches there."
The tournament, which runs from 19 February to 9 March 2025, will feature eight teams: Pakistan, India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
The ICC is expected to release the final schedule for the event next week.
India has avoided bilateral cricket series with Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, attributed to militants from across the border.
Currently, the two teams face each other only in multinational tournaments such as the World Cup and Asia Cup.
