Sunil Chopra: Southwark’s first and only Asian Deputy Mayor

AN ASIAN businessman is serving as Southwark Council’s deputy mayor for the third time.

Sunil Chopra claims to be the first and only Asian mayor of the south London borough.

Chopra was elected as the mayor of Southwark in 2014-2015 and has also served as the General Secretary of the Indian Overseas Congress (London).

Born and brought up in New Delhi, he completed his graduation from Delhi University in law and served as the president of the National Student Union of India in 1975.

He has been living in London for the past 40 years and is involved in local community work. He is also the founder trustee of the Southwark Hindu Centre and is keen to promote businesses and charities related to the Asian diaspora.

“I feel really proud to be an Indian. It is not only a great honour for me and my family but for the whole Indian community. I will keep working with the community locally and internationally," Chopra had said on his second term as deputy mayor.
