Editorial Policy
Introduction
This Editorial Policy sets out the standards and procedures that govern Eastern Eye’s journalism. It applies to all editorial staff, freelance contributors, commissioned writers, photographers, videographers and any person producing material for publication under the Eastern Eye masthead. The policy is designed to ensure that our reporting is accurate, fair, independent and accountable, while reflecting the South Asian perspective that is central to our mission. The Editorial Policy complements and operates alongside the Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy and applicable legal requirements.
Editorial independence
Garavi Gujarat Publications Ltd is committed to preserving the editorial independence of Eastern Eye. Editorial decisions about what to publish, how to cover stories and how to allocate reporting resources are made by editors and journalists based on newsworthiness, public interest and journalistic judgement, without undue influence from advertisers, sponsors, owners or third parties. Where potential conflicts of interest arise those conflicts must be declared and managed in accordance with internal policies so as to protect editorial integrity and public trust.
Accuracy, sourcing and verification
Eastern Eye strives for factual accuracy and context in all reporting. Journalists are required to verify information with reliable sources, cite sources where appropriate, and seek comment from people affected by the reporting before publication when practicable. Primary source material should be prioritised. Editors should ensure that headlines and summaries accurately reflect the content of the story and do not mislead. Where a claim cannot be verified, the degree of uncertainty should be made clear. We keep records of source material and verification steps for accountability.
Corrections, clarifications and retractions
When an error is identified we will correct it promptly and transparently. Corrections should state what was incorrect, what the correct information is and when the correction was made. Where material errors undermine the integrity of a piece the Publisher will retract the article and, where appropriate, publish an explanation and apology. A corrections log will be maintained and accessible within editorial processes to ensure that mistakes are tracked and learning is captured.
Fairness, balance and non-discrimination
Reporting must be fair and balanced. Journalists must take care to avoid bias, stereotyping and sensationalistic framing. Opinions and commentary must be clearly labeled so readers can distinguish commentary from news reporting. Coverage of protected groups and minority communities should be sensitive to context and avoid amplifying harmful stereotypes. Language and images should respect the dignity of people featured in our reporting.
Handling sensitive topics
Special care is required when reporting on sexual violence, mental health, vulnerable people, children, race, religion and other sensitive subjects. Graphic imagery should only be used if essential to public understanding and should be accompanied by warnings and context. Medical or health-related claims must be verified against authoritative sources and must not be presented as a substitute for professional advice. Identifying victims of sexual crime, minors or persons in vulnerable situations should be avoided unless there is informed consent or an overriding public interest.
Anonymous sources and confidentiality
Anonymous sources may be used only when the information is essential, cannot be reliably obtained from on-the-record sources, and when editors are satisfied that the source’s motives are not to mislead and that the information is in the public interest. Editors should, where possible, corroborate material from anonymous sources. The identity of confidential sources is protected, subject to lawful requirements and best practice. When handling whistleblowers and confidential material, legal and editorial guidance must be sought.
Sponsored content and advertising separation
Sponsored content, advertorials and branded features must be clearly labelled as such at the top of the page and within the content so readers can easily distinguish them from editorial journalism. The editorial team is not subject to commercial direction in relation to news stories; advertisers do not have editorial control. Any modification of sponsored material for legal or compliance reasons should be limited to addressing the identified issue and should be disclosed.
User-generated content and moderation
We welcome contributions from readers but require that user-generated content complies with editorial standards and the Terms and Conditions. Submissions are subject to moderation and may be edited for clarity, length or legal compliance. Content that is defamatory, abusive, illegal or otherwise in breach of policy will be removed. Users retain ownership of their work but grant the Publisher a licence to publish and use submitted material.
Legal risk management and editorial review
Stories that raise libel, privacy, contempt, national security or other high legal risk must be referred to the legal team for review before publication. Editors must ensure that reporting carries adequate attribution, evidence and context to reduce legal exposure. Where reporting involves complex legal or ethical questions, senior editorial oversight is required and a documented decision-making record should be maintained.
Social media, multiplatform publishing and amplification
Editorial standards apply equally across social media, newsletters, podcasts and any other platform where Eastern Eye publishes content. Journalists must take care when promoting content on social channels to preserve accuracy, avoid amplifying misinformation and to moderate public interactions where feasible. Corrections and updates should be applied across all platforms where the original content was published.
Reader engagement, complaints and right of reply
Eastern Eye encourages reader engagement and values feedback. Editorial complaints should be submitted through the designated channels and will be investigated by senior editorial staff. Where a complaint is upheld appropriate corrective action will be taken and the complainant informed of the outcome. Subjects of reporting will be offered a right of reply when allegations or criticisms are made about them in news reporting.
Training, standards and continuous improvement
The Publisher is committed to regular training and professional development for journalists and editorial staff covering ethics, law, fact-checking, diversity and inclusion, and the technical skills needed for contemporary journalism. Editorial processes and guidance are reviewed periodically to reflect changes in law, technology and professional standards.
Governance and compliance
Garavi Gujarat Publications Ltd will ensure the Editorial Policy is implemented and periodically reviewed by senior editorial management in consultation with legal and compliance teams. The policy is published to provide transparency to readers and contributors and to uphold the standards and reputation of Eastern Eye.
Conclusion
This Editorial Policy is intended to protect editorial independence, promote accuracy and fairness, and maintain the trust of our readership. All staff, contributors and freelancers who produce content for Eastern Eye are expected to comply with these standards. Where there is uncertainty, editorial staff should consult senior editors or legal advisors to ensure that reporting upholds the principles set out in this policy.
