Zayn Malik has ended his high-profile romance with Gigi Hadid

Zayn Malik's romance with Victoria's Secret model Gigi Hadid has come to an end.

The former One Direction singer took to his social media page to announce the end of their relationship, which lasted for about two years.

"Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend," he wrote on Twitter. "She has such an incredible soul. I'm grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ," the singer added.

It is not immediately known what caused the duo to part ways, but according to one report, it was Hadid who pulled the plug on the relationship. Malik reportedly wanted to marry her and even proposed to the model. But she never took him seriously, claims a HollywoodLife source.

"He wishes she had said yes to him, but she told him she was too young and has a lot she wants to accomplish with her career before having children,” the source said.

Malik and Hadid reportedly got together in early 2016. Speculation that they were an item started swirling around after Hadid and Malik walked the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala.

Months ago, Malik even got a tattoo of Hadid's eyes on his chest.

Shortly after announcing his split from Hadid, the British singer unfollowed both her and mom Yolanda Hadid on Instagram. Malik shared a special bond with Yolanda, and the former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star once said she considered Malik as part of her family.

"He's a beautiful human being from Bradford, England," Yolanda told MailOnline about Malik. "He's from the same background that I'm from, him and I get along great and he's like a son to me. It's all good. He has no family here and he's so far away so I understand that life because I lived that life. I think that I'm just a momma to him."
